Can a G1 Driver Drive on the Highway?

Short answer: no, not the high-speed ones. A G1 driver must not drive on 400-series highways with a posted limit over 80 km/h, or on certain named expressways. There is a single exception: if your accompanying driver is a licensed driving instructor, you may drive on any road.

Which roads are off limits

While you hold a G1, you cannot drive on:

• 400-series highways (such as the 400, 401, 403, 404 or 417) where the posted speed limit is over 80 km/h.
• Named high-speed expressways, including the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway in the Greater Toronto Area, the E.C. Row Expressway in Windsor, and the Conestoga Parkway in Kitchener-Waterloo.

These are the fast, multi-lane freeways where traffic moves too quickly for a brand-new driver to practise safely.

The one exception: a driving instructor

There is exactly one way a G1 driver can use those highways: your accompanying driver must be a licensed driving instructor. With an instructor beside you, you may drive on any road.

For most learners practising with a parent or friend, that means high-speed highways simply wait until the next stage.

What a G1 driver can drive on

It is easy to read "no highways" and feel boxed in, so here is the fuller picture. With your accompanying driver in the front seat, and outside the midnight to 5 a.m. window, you can drive on:

• City and town streets.
• Rural roads and other routes that are not the high-speed freeways listed above.

One point that trips people up is the word "highway" itself. The G1 rule is not about every road. It is specifically the high-speed freeways listed above (the 400-series and the named expressways like the QEW). Ordinary city, town and rural roads are fine, as long as your accompanying driver is with you.

Highways open up at G2

The wait is not forever. Once you pass your first road test and reach G2, highway driving is allowed. In fact, you will need real highway experience (on roads with limits of at least 80 km/h) before you can take your full G road test, so the freeways become part of your practice then.

Practise the G1 rules
