How Many Passengers Can a G1 Driver Have?

Short answer: a G1 driver can carry as many passengers as there are working seatbelts in the vehicle. There is no special number cap on a G1. The one firm condition is that the front passenger seat is reserved for your accompanying driver, and everyone must be buckled into their own seatbelt.

The two rules that decide the answer

Two rules together set the limit.

1. The front seat belongs to your accompanying driver. On a G1 you can't drive alone. A driver with a full Class G licence, at least four years of experience, and a blood-alcohol level under .05 must sit in the front passenger seat. They are the only person allowed up front.

2. One seatbelt per person. Every passenger needs a working seatbelt of their own. You cannot put more people in the car than there are seatbelts, and no two people may share a belt.

Put those together and the real limit on friends is simple: as many as you have working seatbelts in the back.

G1 has no passenger cap, but G2 does

This is where a lot of learners get confused, because G1 and G2 have different passenger rules:

• G1: no limit on the number of passengers beyond seatbelts. The front seat is for your accompanying driver.
• G2 (drivers aged 19 and under): a cap applies between midnight and 5 a.m. In those hours, during the first six months you may carry only one passenger aged 19 or under, and up to three after six months, with a few exemptions (such as immediate family, or a fully licensed driver up front).

So if you have read about a "one passenger" or "three passenger" rule, that is the G2 rule for young drivers, not the G1 rule. On a G1, seatbelts are your limit.

Why this matters beyond the test

This is not just a fact to tick off. If you drive without a working seatbelt for every passenger, you can lose your licence for at least 30 days. Make sure everyone is buckled in, every single trip.
