The G2 and G Road Tests: What to Expect

Ontario has two road tests: the G2 test (which moves you from G1 to G2) and the G2 exit test (which earns your full licence). Both are booked through DriveTest and follow clear rules about what to bring. Here's what to expect.

Two road tests, two milestones

• The first road test takes you from G1 to G2. You can take it after 12 months at G1 (or 8 months with a Beginner Driver Education course).
• The second (the G2 exit test) takes you from G2 to a full Class G. You can take it after at least 12 months at G2.

Booking your road test

You book both tests through DriveTest, online, by phone, or in person. You prepay to reserve your slot. If you need to retake a test, you must wait at least 10 days between attempts, so plan any rebooking around that.

What to bring on the day

The same rules apply to both road tests:

• The right vehicle: one that fits the test, is properly plated, and is insured.
• No passengers or pets in the car except the examiner.
• If you're still a Level One (G1) driver taking your first road test, you must bring an accompanying driver to the centre. You can't drive there alone.

A quick check the day before saves a lot of stress: confirm your vehicle is roadworthy and insured, that its plates and paperwork are in order, and (if you're a G1 driver) that your accompanying driver is free to come with you. Arriving with the wrong setup can cost you the appointment.

The G2 exit test needs highway experience

The final test (the G2 exit test) includes highway driving. To take it, you need experience on highways with speed limits of at least 80 km/h, and you'll complete a Declaration of Highway Driving Experience form. So during your G2 year, get comfortable on faster roads well before you book.

How to prepare

• Practise the specific skills each test checks, on the kind of roads the test uses.
• For the exit test, log real highway time until it feels routine.
• Keep your vehicle test-ready: plated, insured, and in good working order.
