The Graduated Licensing Timeline (and How to Cut the Wait)

Ontario's graduated licensing runs on a clock: at least 12 months at G1 and at least 12 months at G2, with a five-year window to finish the whole thing. The one legal shortcut is a driver-education course. Here's the full timeline and how to shorten it.

The clock at each stage

Level One (G1): 12 months

You must spend 12 months at G1 before your first road test. This is your supervised learning year. Use it to build real driving hours with your accompanying driver.

Level Two (G2): at least 12 months

After you pass your first road test, you spend at least 12 months at G2 before you can take the final exit test for your full G. During this stage you're driving on your own, so it's the time to build solo and highway experience.

The five-year window

Novice drivers (G1 and G2) have five years to complete graduated licensing. Miss that window and you have to requalify, so it pays to keep moving through the stages.

The one real way to cut the wait: a BDE course

An approved Beginner Driver Education (BDE) course shortens Level One from 12 months to 8, cutting four months off your wait to reach G2. It may also lower your insurance. It's the only shortcut built into the system, and it's a good one.

Can you speed up the rest?

The 12-month minimums are exactly that: minimums, not countdowns you can shrink. But you fully control how ready you are when each window opens:

• Book your G1 knowledge test as soon as you're scoring well on free practice questions.
• Use your G1 year to log plenty of supervised driving.
• Build highway experience during G2 so you're ready for the exit test the moment 12 months is up.

Being ready on day one of each window is the real way to avoid extra waiting.

Don't lose time to a retest

There's also a small trap worth knowing: if you fail a road test, you have to wait at least 10 days before trying again, and that gap can push your timeline back further than you'd expect once you factor in rebooking. Passing each test the first time keeps your schedule tight. So don't book a road test to "see how it goes"; book it when you're confident you'll pass.

A sample timeline

• Month 0: pass the G1 knowledge test.
• Months 0 to 8 (with a BDE course) or 0 to 12: drive supervised at G1.
• Take your first road test → G2.
• Next 12+ months: build solo and highway experience.
• Take the G2 exit test → full G.

At the fastest, that's roughly 20 months from G1 to full G with a driver-education course, and about two years without one, assuming you pass each road test as soon as you're eligible.
