What does the winding road warning sign mean?

Yellow diamond warning sign with an arrow that bends back and forth several times.
Correct answer

A winding road with several bends is ahead. Slow down

This sign warns of a winding road ahead, a series of bends. Slow down and steer smoothly through the curves.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • A single sharp right turn is ahead

One sharp turn gets its own sign, with a single bent arrow pointing one way. This arrow swings left and right more than once, which means a run of bends, not one corner.

  • The road ahead is closed for detour

Detours are posted on orange temporary condition signs, with markers that guide you back to your normal route. This yellow diamond is a permanent warning about the road itself, here a stretch of bends to slow down for.

  • A slippery road is ahead

The slippery pavement warning shows a car with skid tracks behind it, and it applies when the road is wet. This sign shows only the path of the road, so the bends are the hazard.

Quick way to remember

The arrow does not go straight; neither does the road.

Based on the official Ontario MTO Driver's Handbook.
