What is the speed limit outside a city with no posted sign?

Correct answer

80 km/h

Where no limit is posted, the maximum is 80 km/h outside built-up areas (and 50 km/h inside cities, towns and villages). Always slow down further when conditions require it.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • 50 km/h

That is the unposted maximum inside cities, towns and villages. Once you are past the built-up area and still see no sign, the default rises to 80.

  • 90 km/h

Ontario has no 90 default. With no sign there are only two numbers to remember: 50 in built-up areas and 80 outside them.

  • 100 km/h

A limit this high only applies where a sign posts it. The question says nothing is posted, so you fall back to the default of 80 outside built-up areas.

Quick way to remember

Open road, not a built-up area. The default is higher than in town.
