The Zero-Alcohol Rule for New and Young Ontario Drivers

Ontario has one of the clearest rules on the books for new drivers, and it's worth knowing exactly: if you're a new driver or a young driver, your blood-alcohol level must be zero when you drive. Not "under the limit": zero.

Who the zero rule covers

Two groups must have no alcohol at all in their blood while driving:

• Every novice driver: that's anyone with a G1 or G2 licence, at any age.
• Every driver aged 21 and under, no matter what class of licence they hold.

So if you're 19 with a G2, the rule applies twice over. If you're 25 but still hold a G2, it still applies. There is no "one drink is fine": the only safe number before driving is none.

What happens if you break it

Getting caught with any alcohol in your system as a new or young driver brings real consequences:

• An immediate 24-hour roadside licence suspension on the spot.
• If you're convicted, a fine and a licence suspension of at least 30 days.

And because breaking a graduated-licensing condition is itself an offence, it can stack with the escalating sanctions that apply to novice drivers.

Why the rule is this strict

New drivers are still building experience, and alcohol slows reaction time, blurs judgement, and makes it harder to handle the unexpected, exactly the skills a new driver leans on most. The zero rule removes the guesswork: you never have to wonder whether you're "okay to drive," because the answer, if you've had anything at all, is always no.

If you're driving on a G1 or G2, or you're 21 or under, treat drinking and driving as completely separate activities with no overlap. Plan another way home before you go out, every time.
