What does the traffic signal ahead warning sign mean?

Yellow diamond warning sign showing a traffic light with red, yellow and green lights.
Correct answer

Traffic lights are ahead. Slow down and be ready to stop

This warning sign means traffic lights are ahead. Slow down and be ready to stop in case the light is red or changes as you approach.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • A traffic light is out of service ahead

The sign warns that lights are coming, working as normal. Nothing on it says the signal has failed, so treat the lights as live and expect a red as you arrive.

  • You have the right-of-way through the next intersection

This sign only warns you that lights are coming. It does not decide who goes: at a signal the light does that, and a red light means a complete stop. So your job here is to slow down and be ready.

  • A railway crossing is ahead

The railway warning looks different: an X-shaped crossing sign, or a diamond showing tracks angled across the road. Here the symbol is a signal head with red, yellow and green lights.

Quick way to remember

The symbol on the diamond is something you obey at an intersection.

Based on the official Ontario MTO Driver's Handbook.
