How do you go from a G1 to a G2 licence in Ontario?
By passing a road test of driving skills
Ontario uses graduated licensing. To move from Level One (G1) to Level Two (G2), you must pass a road test of your driving skills.
Why the other answers are wrong

By passing a second written knowledge test
The written test is how you earn the G1 in the first place. Moving up to G2 is judged in the car instead, with an examiner sitting in and watching you drive.

Automatically, after holding the G1 for 12 months
Time is only half the story. Level One runs for 12 months, or eight months if you pass an approved driver-education course, but nothing upgrades on its own. You still book and pass the road test.

By paying a fee to upgrade the licence
Fees are real, so this one feels close. Your first application fee even covers a road test. But the fee books the test, it never replaces passing it.
