What does a no U-turn sign mean?

White square sign with a U-shaped turn arrow inside a red circle with a diagonal slash.
Correct answer

Do not make a U-turn here

A red circle and slash over a U-shaped arrow means you must not make a U-turn (turn around to go in the opposite direction) here.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Do not turn left here

That is a different sign. A no-left-turn sign strikes out an arrow that bends left one time. This arrow curls all the way around and doubles back, the movement that reverses your direction.

  • A winding road is ahead

Winding road ahead is a warning: a yellow diamond showing the road bending back and forth, with nothing crossed out. A white square with a red circle and slash is a rule you must obey.

  • Make a U-turn to reach your destination

A red circle with a line through it always bans the action drawn inside, it never tells you to do it. Before any U-turn, your first job is to check for exactly this sign.

Quick way to remember

The curved arrow doubles back on itself. Think about the manoeuvre that does the same.

Based on the official Ontario MTO Driver's Handbook.
